Springtime is a great time to ensure your vehicle is running properly. Car maintenance is important to ensure your safety and to keep your vehicle in great working order. There are a number of things that should be routinely checked--don’t neglect under the hood of your car. In addition to the maintenance checks mentioned in Part 1, here are a few additional components to check that will help keep your vehicle safe and operating:

Check Your Battery

Your car’s battery is foundational to your vehicle’s electrical system. An issue with your battery will impact your vehicle’s operation as a whole. It’s a good idea to test your battery’s condition, as well as the tension and wear on your alternator belt. Make sure your battery is secured in place; it’s dangerous for a battery to be bouncing around within a vehicle. The battery shouldn’t have any corrosion or discoloration around any of its parts, or else it should be carefully cleaned. To help conserve the battery, switch off all lights and ensure the radio is off when the car isn’t being used. Batteries generally last around 3-5 years, depending on your particular vehicle. It’s a good idea to carry jumper cables in your vehicle in case you (or someone else) have a battery issue and need a quick jump.

Check Your Fluids

Checking your vehicle’s fluids is absolutely essential for your vehicle’s maintenance. When you check the fluids in your vehicle, in general it’s wise to ensure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface, your engine is off and cooled down, and you’re wearing proper protective gear like gloves and eyewear. There are a number of fluids that are very important to the functionality of your vehicle--so pop your hood, and check the levels of your fluids:

-Check your oil: Remove your oil dipstick. Wipe off the dipstick with a cloth, then dip it into the oil tube again. Pull it out once more, and check to see that your oil is between the minimum and maximum fill lines. It’s recommended that a vehicle has an oil change approximately every 3,500-5,000 miles, depending on your vehicle and your driving habits. An adequate oil level is essential to keep your vehicle safely operating. Check out these oil change tips for more information.

-Check your coolant: Ensure your engine is cool, then locate the coolant reservoir to check (you can usually eyeball it) the coolant level and ensure it falls between the minimum and maximum recommended levels. It’s recommended to have your cooling system flushed approximately every 2 years or 30,000 miles, depending on your circumstances.

-Check your windshield washer fluid: This is very important to check to make sure your visibility remains clear. When you’re driving, it’s obviously important to see where you’re going. It’s easy to check and maintain--just pour the windshield washer fluid into the appropriate reservoir until it’s full and ensure the cap is sealed on tightly.

-Other very important fluids to check are your power steering fluid, your brake fluid, and your transmission fluid. Consider looking into these car care tips that will help ensure your vehicle is safe for driving.

Regular car maintenance is vital to help ensure safe travels. Remember to check your battery and your fluids regularly to ensure your vehicle is in proper working order.
