Auto Mechanic Hudson WI | Spring Car Maintenance Tips (Part 1)

All vehicles need regular car maintenance checks to make sure they are safe to be operating on the roads. This list breaks down a few important considerations both under the hood and on the exterior of the vehicle. Always be alert about any changes you notice within your vehicle, such as odd or unusual sounds, scents and vibrations that make you uneasy. Trust your gut if there is something you find to be uncharacteristic and take it to an automotive expert to ensure your vehicle has everything it needs to be safe to drive. Here are 4 preventative maintenance components to routinely check:

Check Your Windshield Wipers

It’s very important for the driver to have unobstructed visibility, so that’s why it’s important to ensure your windshield wipers are in working order. There is a big difference between smearing around water, dirt and debris, and completely wiping it away to ensure clear visibility. The rubber on the windshield wipers shouldn’t be deteriorated and there should be no cracks or damage to the wipers. It’s also important to make sure your windshield wiper fluid is filled up, so you don’t run out when you need it (more about windshield wiper fluid will be mentioned in Part 2).

Check Your Lights

Don’t forget about your lights when you’re checking your vehicle’s functions. Your lights are important and courteous signals to other drivers that help keep the roads safe, efficient, and functioning. When checking your lights, you might ask a friend or family member to ensure that your headlights (high and low beam), fog lights, turn signals, running lamps, taillights, brake lights, and hazards are all in working order.

Check Your Tires

When you check your tires, know what you’re looking for. Consider your tire pressure, your tread depth and how it’s wearing, and how often your tires are rotated.

-Purchase a tire pressure gauge that will help you determine your tire’s current PSI. To know the recommended air pressure for your particular vehicle’s tires, check the panel inside your door or inside your owner’s manual (usually between 30 and 35 PSI). If your TPMS light is on, it’s a good indication that your tires are under-inflated.

-Rotating your tires frequently is very important to extend the lifetime of your tires and to help your car’s fuel economy. Without frequent tire rotation, your vehicle’s alignment may become altered. Tire rotation helps keep adequate tire pressure and is important for keeping your tire tread for longer periods of time.

-If you notice the tread on your tires has significantly depleted, it is probably time to purchase a new set of tires. Tread depletes when tires aren’t rotated, when driving habits are harsh, or after extended periods of time. Driving a vehicle without tread is dangerous because it causes a lack of control when operating; hydroplaning and sliding on snow and ice become more of a risk.

Check Your Air Filter

Located under your vehicle’s hood, one of the first things you might notice when checking on your air filter is looking to make sure your air filter housing is secured. If the housing around your air filter is loose, it’s likely that dirty air is being sucked from under your hood through your air filter into your engine, potentially doing expensive damage to your vehicle. When temporarily removing the housing and checking your air filter, look for the amount of dirt and debris within your air filter. Sometimes it may work to clean out your air filter and put it back in, while other times it’s a good idea to replace your air filter if it has gotten too full of dirt and/or debris.

Frequent and regular maintenance checks for your vehicle’s safety and operation are essential. Consider looking at this monthly checklist for tips on how to keep your vehicle operating optimally. If you have any concerns about your vehicle, trust your gut. It’s better to investigate any potential issues with your vehicle than have other negative consequences.
