Winter Tires Near New Richmond WI

Hello! Welcome to Part 2 of our blog series “Summer VS All-Season VS Winter Tires”! The question we - your local car repair shop near New Richmond WI, Tire Pros & Wheel Experts - ask is that does it really make a difference on which of these types of tires you drive on? The short answer is: Yes! The only point of contact between your car and the road is your tires, and variations in the nature of the tread and rubber compound make these types of tires somewhat different from each other, creating a big difference not only in how they sound, but in how they work. Let’s dig into more details.

All-Season Tires

It is a popular misconception that all-season tyres, in all weather conditions, are suitable for year-round driving. The reality is that in a number of cases, all-season tires are built to be reliable, but in none, excellent. All-season tires lose some wet weather stability to attain mild traction in ice and snow. All-season tires sacrifice stability and traction in cold weather in order to have long-lasting tread life. In wet weather, all-season tires do not usually work as well as summer or winter tires. All-season tires normally perform better than winter tires in dry weather, but they also do not perform as well as summer tires. In winter conditions, all-season tires work better than summer tires, but are slightly less useful than winter tires in winter conditions. Summer Tires

Many drivers believe that summer tires are only built for dry weather results. The reality is that in wet conditions, summer tires often provide excellent traction. In dry and wet conditions, summer tires feature wider treads and softer rubber compounds, facilitating responsive handling. To provide wet traction and resistance to hydroplaning, they also have deep circumferential grooves. In wet and dry conditions, summer tires usually perform better than both winter and all-season tires. In fact, in all conditions except winter, summer tires generally outperform winter and all-season tires. For winter driving conditions, summer tires should not be used (more on this below).

Winter Tires

Winter tires are specialized specifically for cold weather driving, formerly referred to as "snow tires." Winter tires have rubber formulations that remain flexible at temperatures below 45 degrees and have more aggressive tread patterns for traction in snow and ice without the need for studding, as compared to snow tires of the past. For additional biting edges on ice, winter tires often feature siping patterns. All of these qualities combine to produce a soft tire that has outstanding traction in winter. With respect to driving in dry, snowy, snow, sleet, and frozen winter weather, winter tires are much superior to all-season tires. In both dry and wet warm weather conditions, summer tires excel, but become too rigid in cold weather to be able to provide reliable results. Regardless of road conditions, winter tires have the most consistent efficiency over any all-season or summer tire until temperatures drop below 45 degrees.
