Before the winter weather sets in, ensure your vehicle is operating safely and reliably. Part 1 noted that keeping your tires properly inflated, storing winter materials in your car, and checking your battery are all important ways to ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter. Here are 3 more things you can do to prep your car for winter driving:
Ensure you have an adequate amount of oil in your vehicle any time of year, though it’s especially important during winter to minimize the risk of your vehicle breaking down in freezing temperatures. Check your oil often to determine if you need an oil change, which is recommended approximately every 5,000 miles (depending on your vehicle and other factors). To check your oil, ensure your engine is off and your vehicle is cool. Open your vehicle’s hood and locate the dipstick, pull it out, then wipe off any oil. Insert the dipstick back into the tube, push it all the way in, and pull it out again. You know you have an adequate amount of oil if the oil line falls in between the designated markings. If your oil level is below the markings, it’s time to take your vehicle in to get an oil change near New Richmond as soon as possible to minimize the risk of your engine overheating.
It’s critical to ensure your vehicle has a fully functioning brake system. Without properly working brakes, the probability of a major accident increases significantly because your car can’t slow down or come to a stop. Brake maintenance is important because it helps ensure your brake components don’t need to be replaced. Worn-out brake pads put a strain on other components of your brake system such as the rotors, drums, and calipers. This can quickly cause the need for brake repair. Damage to these parts is much more costly compared to getting a vehicle inspection that will help ensure your brakes are fully functional. If you notice your vehicle shakes, excess pressure to brake is needed, vehicle pulling, if you hear your brakes squeaking when you press the pedal, scratching or grinding when driving, or if your brake warning light is on, it’s time to get brake repair services from your local auto technicians.
Rotating tires is done by alternating the positions of your tires, so the front tires go in the back and vise-versa. Every vehicle has a suggested pattern to follow when it comes to rotating the tires. Tire rotations and tire balancing should be done approximately every 4,000-6,000 miles, and it’s often done at the same time as a regular oil change. After driving thousands of miles, your tire tread will start to wear out in a particular way, and rotating your tires helps balance out the wear which gives your tires more life. Getting a tire rotation will help your vehicle have a smoother, more comfortable driving experience, which is especially beneficial in the winter months. If you haven’t gotten your tires rotated recently, it’s a good idea to do so before winter to help promote smooth and safe driving.
