Does Blue Smoke Come Out Of Your Exhaust?

 

Under normal circumstances, the particles that come out of your car’s exhaust will be transparent and mostly invisible. If in winter (or any cold weather) you see a cloud coming out from your exhaust pipe, that is fine as well. This cloud is made up mainly from water vapor and will clear out as the engine warms up after 3-4 minutes. But, if you ever notice a bluish smoke coming out from your exhaust, you have a problem. Such a smoke is a sign of engine oil seeping into the engine and being burned along with the gas. Consequently, the oil level of your vehicle will also droop down. Sometimes, a bluish smoke is also a result of an external oil leak, i.e., the oil is dripping into the exhaust system. Do You Smell Oil Inside The Car?

 

Observing the color of smoke coming out of your exhaust is one way of detecting a leak. The other is smelling oil inside the car. Oil filter – When the car is in use, the engine oil picks up a lot of debris (engine slug for an example) due to which it turns dark. To maximize the use of this oil, manufacturers equip their cars with an oil filter that separates particulate matter from the oil. This filter should be replaced at each oil change. However, oil will leak from this filter if it’s not properly seated or it has deteriorated before you went for an oil change.

 

Oil sending unit – These units, also known as pressure switches, are normally located on the back of the engine. But, if they are damaged, they can leak oil down the block.

 

Head gasket – A head gasket sits between the engine block and the cylinder heads. If this part leaks, you are in bad luck. When oil starts leaking from this gasket, it quickly spills down the head of the engine. The only way to fix this issue is an engine tear down followed by replacement of affected parts.
